Myrtle

Organized by Boston Terrier Rescue of NC

Myrtle the Turtle
That's her new nickname, says her foster mom. She's gained much needed weight, just over 2 pounds. She's a beast of an eater!

Her liver levels have not stabilized, they are even higher. There was quite a bit of fat in her blood which indicated that her liver isn't metabolizing fat, so the doctor recommends putting her on a low fat diet which Jennifer is doing. The vet wants to do an ultrasound on her (the one she had previously had done was a cardiac ultrasound to ensure that her heart was healthy enough to undergo anesthesia for her surgeries) and take a look at her liver. The vet doesn't suspect cancer because she doesn't feel any tumors, but she does say the fact that her liver enzymes continue to go up rapidly does indicate something is wrong. Since about 90% of what we ingest has to go through the liver, it is crucial we find out what is going on and why she isn't metabolizing fat and why the enzymes continue to climb. She still hasn't ruled out Cushings disease. What is going on will be revealed by the ultrasound.

Myrtle also has some additional lumps and bumps on her. The vet said they were just "old lady growths" and none at all appear to be mall cell tumors or anything threatening.

She has also been noticeably limping for the past week and a half so the vet looked at that as well. It seems the extra weight she has put on has been affecting her left shoulder and wrist. She has progressed arthritis in her carpal and shoulder joints. The Tramadol that she is on should keep her comfortable and she is also getting glucosamine.

Update from Myrtle's foster mom

"
Here was what I learned from her vet visit Tuesday...
She has lost some weight which concerns the vet because she has elevated liver levels and decreased protein levels. This is an indication of Cushings Disease. Dr. Rohr believes her liver has been through so much recently with all the meds, surgery and anesthesia, so Myrtle will go back in a month for a liver recheck... this will tell us more about those elevated levels and whether or not this something ongoing or just a result of the initial treatment. She has been through a lot... Dr. Rohr says she hasn't seen many dogs in this condition that were able to survive the trauma... she then followed that up by saying the change and progress in Myrtle has been remarkable. I think Myrtle is just now understanding what love is all about. She will follow me around the house... she is reserved with any type of emotional reciprocation... I'm not sure she understands affection or how to reciprocate. She did come and sit on my lap yesterday, she has never done that before, so I know she is starting to understand love and being loved. I can't even wait for the update I'll send in 3 months. Let's just pray for a non Cushings diagnosis in a month."

Myrtle's tumor results came back
Remember when Myrtle had surgery last week. Well, the test results came back and they were all benign!!! That's wonderful news. She is doing great and will have a new update with pictures soon.
Myrtle had surgery today
She got her mammary tumors and her bad teeth removed today. She's doing well and here are a few pictures.

Here she is all groggy after surgery

Her tongue is hanging out because she lost 8 teeth today and only has 6 remaining. Thank you for your contributions and prayers.
Myrtle's echocardiogram
Myrtle's foster mom said the echocardiogram yesterday shows some enlargement of the heart and thickening of the walls. It is healthy enough for anesthesia so she'll have surgery tomorrow to remove the bad teeth and the mammary tumors.
Back to the vet
Myrtle spent the weekend at her new home with her new family but must go back to the vet today. She's going to have an echocardiogram to look at her heart and make sure it's strong enough for anesthesia. If it is, she will have surgery Wednesday to remove the mammary tumors and a few bad teeth. Please keep her in your prayers and if you have a few dollars you can spare, she would be forever grateful.
